Peer Counselors are an important tool in our efforts to support breastfeeding families. This two-day training will build skills in training and preparing Peer Counselors at the WIC local agencies using the “Loving Support Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together” materials. It will cover materials available to train peer counselors, including evidence-based breastfeeding strategies, activities, and innovative teaching strategies designed to encourage interactive learning.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand how adults learn
- Identify trainer skills needed to provide an interactive adult learning environment
- Access basic and new breastfeeding information and resources from the Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together learning platform
- ·Practice facilitating an activity using materials and resources from the Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together
*This training is mandatory for new Breastfeeding Coordinators and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinators who have not attended a previous offering of the class. Breastfeeding Coordinators and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinators wishing to attend again as a refresher, may do so, space permitting.
**This program will incorporate skills practice using the Loving Support training platform and participants are asked to bring: a laptop with PowerPoint 2007 or PowerPoint 2010 with the “Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together” platform loaded onto the computer. (The Training DVD was distributed at the training conducted by NYSDOH and Regional Staff)
Note that this training is NOT intended for Peer Counselors.
